Responsibilities
Supervisor, Melanie Oakes, PhD
Under supervision incumbents perform standard repetitive laboratory experimental procedures that require technical scientific knowledge and skills which might be expected from incumbents at the college “lower division” level or from incumbents who have acquired equivalent knowledge and skills through experience.
Technical assignments with appropriate training, at this level typically include duties such as: extracting nucleic acids from biological samples, performing quality control, performing sizing and PCR analysis of samples, preparing reagents using basic ingredients; as appropriate, combining kitted reagents, performing controlled fragmentation of nucleic acids, processing and sectioning tissues, preparing and staining slides, fractionating tissues into single cells and placing in suspension for nucleic acid analysis.
Incumbents will be responsible for maintaining in good operating condition, some items of laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, shakers, and incubators) including tracking service contracts for repairs and preventive maintenance. In addition, they will be responsible for maintaining inventory of standard supplies, receiving and appropriately storing supplies for core laboratory use.

Under general supervision, incumbents perform technical and/or supervisory duties in a genomics laboratory.
Incumbents are responsible for maintenance of the inventory, performing or supervising the purchasing, receiving, storing, and distribution of laboratory supplies used by technical staff as well as be responsible for equipment maintenance. They are responsible for intake, labeling and storing of samples from researchers, and scheduling testing using a laboratory information system. They are responsible for supervising junior members of the team in maintaining laboratory supply inventory.
Technical assignments at this level typically require scientific knowledge and skills which might be expected from incumbents at the college “upper division” level or from incumbents who have acquired equivalent knowledge and skills through experience. The following are examples of technical assignments at this level (after appropriate instruction): purification of nucleic acid, quality testing of DNA and RNA samples, fragmentation of nucleic acids, gel electrophoresis to determine size distribution, and PCR analysis. Duties may include preparing samples for DNA or RNA sequence analysis. In addition, the incumbent should be capable of training and supervising laboratory helpers at the undergraduate level in order to assist in a subset of these tasks.

Position description
The Genomics Research and Technology Hub in the Department of Biological Chemistry welcomes applications for a specialist position for genomics and molecular testing. Depending upon experience and skill set, responsibilities could include quality control for samples, generation of sequencing libraries for analysis of genomes and gene expression in bulk and single cell workflows, as well as applications of spatial transcriptomics, optical mapping and microarray. In addition to conducting tests, the candidate will be responsible for regular calibration and maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, placing orders to maintain reagent stocks, acting as the laboratory safety officer and depending on experience, development of SOPs. Candidate will be responsible for analysis of molecular test data, sample storage, and communicating results of molecular tests.
Basic knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, genomics, molecular methods and basic statistics is preferred. Candidates are expected to have had at least two years of laboratory experience. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel. Programming skills, particularly Python or R is advantageous. Experience or interest in cell line authentication or CRSPR screening is a positive.

Assistant Specialists – A Master’s degree (or equivalent degree), or five years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization.
Associate Specialists – A Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Associate Specialists are normally expected to have a record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.
Full Specialists – A Doctoral degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Specialists at full rank are normally expected to have a significant record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field, professional recognition in the field, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.
